Niall, a two-year-old Doberman cross, needs a new home.
For now the dog is being cared for by the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home (EDCH) where he arrived in a terrible state, covered in wounds, skinny and frightened of everything, He was found as a stray and it is only with the expert care of the charity that he has recovered.
The home says that he is now “beginning to show his true personality and learning to trust again”.The journey of this one stray animal is at the heart of the Nowhere Like Home Winter Appeal – where the central message is that every animal deserves to belong somewhere safe.
The rehoming process takes funding and EDCH are aiming to raise £200,000 this festive season to ensure that they can continue to help other animals like Niall. This dog needs a home where the owners have experience of looking after larger dogs and can continue working with him on his confidence. He will require care from someone who is with him all day as he finds being left alone difficult.
Operational costs at Seafield where the charity operates are at an all time high. The home receives around 40 calls each day from pet owners who need some form of help, and took in 301 animals this year – 141 of them as strays.
Amelia Morgan, CEO at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, said: “Every animal deserves to know the comfort and safety of a warm, loving home, especially at Christmas. Niall’s story shows what is possible when kindness and care come together, but there are so many more animals who still need our help.
“The need for our services continues to escalate, and it is only through the generosity of our supporters that we have been able to help both pet owners and their beloved animals. Demand is high, and we need to be able to do more.”
