The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Thierry Fischer performed five pieces for us.

The first was the light-hearted Guarnieri Suite Vila Rica to put us in a pleasant state of mind. The next piece, the Ginastera Violin Concerto, featuring the solo violin of Roman Simovic is a difficult one veering around multiple modes.

The technical brilliance of Simovic was most impressive. The second virtuoso showpiece he executed was Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie part of the score to the 1946 movie Humoresque, also technically exciting.

The second half was Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie which is a big composition requiring a big ensemble in a big hall. The orchestra produced a truly big sound which was absolutely thrilling.

After much applause and noting particular soloists, the orchestra played an encore, Guarnieri’s Dança Brasileira brought that distinct flavour of Brazilian musical culture.

Outstanding.
