Edinburgh-Based artist Draya Madú represents Scotland at the 5th International Mural Festival in Colonia Morelos, Hidalgo, Mexico, the biggest open gallery in Latin America. 

Draya Madú was invited to participate in the festival representing Scotland among 70 artists from 20 different countries. The event, organised by the International Movement of Muralism Italo Grassi based in Argentina, and the cultural organization La Fortaleza in Mexico, showcased the diversity and talent of muralists worldwide. The festival took place from November the 11th to 18th, 2023. 

Colonia Morelos has become a vibrant hub for artistic expression, with a total of 300 murals from artists across the globe after the most recent International Mural Festival.

Draya Madú, a Mexican muralist currently living in Edinburgh received the invitation from Raul Orozco, the international coordinator of the MIM Italo Grassi. The festival coincided with the celebration of 100 years of Mexican muralism, a significant milestone in the rich history of the muralist movement.

For her contribution to this dynamic festival, the artist painted a mural inspired by a quote from Antoine de Saint Exupery’s “The Little Prince.” Her work not only reflects her Mexican heritage but also adds a touch of Scottish creativity to the vibrant tapestry of Colonia Morelos.

It was a unique opportunity to contribute to the rich tapestry of Colonia Morelos and to be part of a global community of muralists.”

The festival, organized by the International Movement of Muralism Italo Grassi and La Fortaleza, not only provided a platform for artists to showcase their talent but also fostered cultural exchange and collaboration. The murals created during the festival have added to the town’s reputation as a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts from around the world.

Draya Madu’s participation in the festival highlights the global impact of muralism and the ability of artists to transcend borders through their work. Her unique perspective as a Mexican muralist now living in Edinburgh adds a layer of cultural richness to the already diverse array of murals in Colonia Morelos.
