Edinburgh is to have its own Tartan Parade on 10 May 2025 which organisers say will be “a key part” of the Edinburgh 900 celebrations.

The event will include pipers, dancers, musicians, and people from all over Scotland to celebrate the heritage of tartan.

Some of those involved in an event this weekend when plans will be formally launched, have already taken part in the New York City Tartan Day Parade. Louise Marshall the piper to the Lord Provost and Hibernian FC piped the World Fair Trade Tartan party down 6th Avenue, and local samba band Pulse of the Place led the 2023 Parade with Grand Marshal, Gail Porter, who is from Portobello.

The new parade is being organised by Tania Pramschufer of Hand Up Events and creator of the World Fair Trade Tartan, and the event will also celebrate World Fair Trade Day. Kyle Dawson the President of the NYC Tartan Day Parade has collaborated with Ms Pramschufer on the plans.

Kyle Dawson said: “The NYC Tartan Day Parade has been a beacon of Scottish pride and heritage for nearly thirty years. We are thrilled to see this tradition extend to Scotland, fostering deeper connections and celebrating the rich Scottish culture.”

Cllr Lezley Marion Cameron, Depute Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh noted: “Edinburgh is proud to host the first Tartan Parade Scotland, aligning with our city’s 900th anniversary. This event not only celebrates our history but also our commitment to cultural diversity and community engagement.”

Registration for the Tartan Parade Scotland 2025 will be available soon at tartanparade.scot following the soft launch event. Families, groups of friends, and tartan and heritage enthusiasts are all invited to join in this celebration of Scottish culture and mark a very special occasion in the City of Edinburgh’s rich history.
