From the Scottish premiere of smash-hit musical Hamilton, to Scottish Ballet’s compelling version of A Streetcar Named Desire, there is a vibrant programme of shows on offer in Edinburgh’s theatres over the coming months

With the new season underway, Edinburgh’s Capital Theatres has released its latest brochure packed with a broad range of touring theatre and national company productions, music, dance, drama and family shows to suit all tastes.

The company runs three venues in the city, The Festival Theatre, The Kings Theatre and The Studio, hosting over 700 performances each year.

Watch out for productions by Scotland’s national companies including Scottish Ballet’s hugely popular A Streetcar Named Desire, a contemporary retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula from the National Theatre of Scotland, and Bizet’s classic Carmen from Scottish Opera.

The touring programme includes National Theatre’s major new adaptation of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, stage versions of movie classics The Shawshank Redemption and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, new and original work from award-winning choreographers Ballet Black: Pioneers, and of course the cultural phenomenon of Hamilton making its Scottish debut (get in quick!).

For families, there is Disney’s Winnie the Pooh and Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling. Or get your pantomine tickets sorted early with The Pantomine Adventures of Peter Pan at the Festival Theatre, followed by Scottish Ballet’s Cinders! in the new year.

Plenty music shows too, including boogie-woogie, swing, jazz, R&B from Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra during the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival in July, or recreate some 70s disco with Lost in Music, party with the Magic of Motown, or dig out the white jumpsuits and singalong with Mania: The Abba Tribute.

Fiona Gibson, CEO of Capital Theatres says

“With the emergence of Spring we begin to look forward to Edinburgh’s vibrant festivals including
Edinburgh International Children’s Festival and Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, both of which you
can learn about in this brochure. We await the imminent announcement of Nicola Benedetti’s
inaugural Edinburgh International Festival programme which we look forward to hosting.

There’s some must-see work from our national companies including Scottish Ballet’s iconic version of
A Streetcar Named Desire before they serve us a new double bill Twice Born, their Christmas cracker
Cinders! and in 2024 their much beloved Swan Lake. Meanwhile Scottish Opera brings Carmen, and
there’s a new adaptation of Dracula from National Theatre of Scotland. Add to this thrilling drama,
magnificent musicals and awe-inspiring dance, plus some child-sized delights and you’ve got a
scintillating season!”
