What is an outside bet in Roulette?

When looking at the Roulette table layout, there are two clear sections – boxes complete with an assigned number inside, and boxes that state things such as even, odd, low, high and so on.

The boxes with assigned numbers inside are known as the inside bet area, and the boxes containing everything else are known as the outside bet area – which is where the bets we’re talking about take place!

Outside Bets

Red / Black

A bet that’s placed within a box or diamond shape, depending on the table layout, that’s block is coloured with either red or black is called a red / black bet. You’ll need to place a betting chip(s) within the centre of the box or diamond, to place a wager on all red or black numbers. This bet is also known as an even money bet, with betting odds for this bet type at 1:1.

Odd / Even

A bet that’s placed within a box stating either odd or even is called an odd / even bet. You’ll need to place a betting chip(s) inside the middle of the box stating either odd or even, to place a wager on all numbers that fall under that category. This bet is known as an even money bet, with betting odds for this bet type at 1:1.

High / Low

A bet that’s placed within a box stating either low or 1 – 18, or, high or 19 – 36, is called a high / low bet. Depending on the table layout, the high / low boxes will either state with text that they’re high or low, or with numbers. You’ll need to place a betting chip(s) inside the middle of the box stating low or high, or, 1 – 18 or 19 – 36, to secure a wager on all numbers that fall within that category. This bet is known as an even money bet, with betting odds for this bet type at 1:1.
