That little piece of cycleway at the top of Leith Street which has never ever been opened, is open to cyclists today.

The difficulty was that there were objections to the segregated cycleway, and Scottish Ministers appointed a Reporter to review both the objections and the council’s plans.

The Scottish Ministers have now given their consent, which means that the segregated cycle lane is now open along with some temporary signage to alert pedestrians and cyclists.

City Centre councillor Joanna Mowat said: “It is great news that a small piece of cycling infrastructure which will help cyclists navigate the Picardy Place guddle is finally open.  Unfortunately given the closure of Leith Walk and York Place, from Monday 17th August it remains an fragment of safety in a wider unsafe network.

“We shall have to wait until October 20 when York Place re-opens with new cycle lane in situ and the lanes around the Picardy island to come into use to get the full benefit of these lanes.  Although Leith Walk will be closed for a sometime more so the journey to and from the Walk will continue to be difficult.”
