Police  are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man after being called to Newkirkgate Shopping Centre at the foot of Leith Walk shortly after 6pm last night following reports that a man had taken ill.

Emergency services attended but sadly the man died at the scene and officers cordoned off the area and installed a tent to allow for a forensic examination.

The death is currently being treated as ‘unexplained’.

A police spokesperson said: “Around 6:05pm, officers were called to the Newkirkgate areas of Leith after a man had taken unwell.

“The man was later pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing.”
