One of Edinburgh’s most popular visitor attractions, Camera Obscura & World of Illusions, reopened to visitors last Wednesday.

Over 1500 visitors have enjoyed the quirky experience over the last five days or so.

The first visitors had never been before and said they had a ball. The management say that the feedback from visitors about the new safety measures is very complimentary. There is now a one-way route so that no visitor misses any of the exhibits.

Those who have been before appreciate the reduced number of people in Camera Obscura at one time. The team is also delighted to be back at work.

Andrew Johnson, General Manager of Camera Obscura & World of Illusions said:“We are very excited to be welcoming visitors back. We’ve worked hard to exceed the Scottish Government’s requirements for opening, but you never know what is going to happen until visitors actually come! On the first day we made immediate tweaks to signage and our service based on customer feedback and our own observations.

“We’ve always been super-responsive to feedback and we think our visitors will keep us on our toes and help keep us right. With a number of hands-on exhibits we installed hand sanitiser dispensers ten years ago. Now we have quadrupled these sanitisers and encourage everyone to regularly clean hands and stay safe.

“As one of Edinburgh’s busiest visitor attractions, with reduced capacity and far fewer visitors to the city, the next few months are going to be challenging in lots of ways. But we’re looking forward to warmly welcoming locals who are using this perfect opportunity to explore their own city, as well as UK visitors holidaying domestically. Our hope is that every visitor will make special memories here, with their friends and family.”

The VisitScotland 5-star rated and ‘Good to Go’ certified attraction has installed a wide range of safety measures to protect visitors and staff, all in keeping with the Scottish Government’s Covid-19 framework and advice. These include social distancing throughout with screens and floor markings where necessary, reduced capacity (30% of normal), online pre-booking advised, contactless payment where possible, timed entry, a new one-way system, signage, masks for visitors recommended, visors and masks for staff, hand sanitiser stations throughout, increased ventilation, regular cleaning and sanitising of all touch points, antiviral ‘fogging’ overnight and of course lots of staff training on safety for themselves and visitors. The attraction has also put a unique spin on signage and masks, all themed to the World of Illusions.

Visitors are also receiving 10% off entry prices until October. This is to reflect the new visitor experience to maintain the highest standards of health and safety. The attraction hopes this will encourage people who’ve never been, or haven’t visited for a while, to come and try it out.

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is open from every day 10am-7pm. Booking in advance online is recommended to get your preferred entry date and time, however visitors can still purchase admission on entry.

Reduced entry prices are:

  • Adult £14.85
  • Senior £13.05
  • Student £13.05
  • Child 5-15 years £11.25
  • Child 0-5 Free
