Certain roads are closed and diversions in place – particularly at the East End where there has been a deal of congestion this week.

There are other diversions across the city which you can see in the Roads Report below but there are changes to the East end of Princes Street which may mean avoiding that area.

The City of Edinburgh Council is working with the contractor, Lothian and Police Scotland to refine the temporary traffic management measures there.

They want to reduce the impact of the closure and in response to the congestion experienced at the Leith St/Waterloo Place junction they are going to introduce a ‘bus gate’ in front of the Balmoral Hotel, which will be operational from 6.00am on Monday 25 November 2019.

This will restrict westbound access to Prince Street to buses, taxis and cycles only.

The objective is to encourage general traffic to use the diversion route shown on the map below, with the resulting reduction in the traffic using the Leith St/Waterloo Place junction in turn improving the flow of the buses.

Transport and Environment Vice Convener Councillor Karen Doran said: “We’ve been working hard with contractors to improve traffic flow while essential work is carried out on the road layout at Picardy Place.

“As part of these measures westbound access to Prince Street will be restricted to buses, taxis and bikes from Monday, with the aim of encouraging general traffic to follow the intended diversion route, in turn reducing congestion on Leith Street and improving journey times for buses. This restriction will be lifted when the York Place westbound carriageway re-opens.

“These changes to Picardy Place are central to a major project to improve the area, in particular for walking, cycling and public transport. We are doing everything we can to facilitate the necessary work to achieve this as quickly as possible and with minimum disruption to the public.”
