A Gorebridge woman who lost her grandmother to ovarian cancer is holding a charity night to raise funds for gynaecological cancer research charity, The Eve Appeal in August.
Charlie Johnston found out that she was a carrier of the BRCA mutation which puts her at risk of ovarian cancer. Next year she will undertake a Sahara trek to raise money for the same charity.
On 24 August she will hold a fundraiser at Gorebridge Bowling Club with a DJ, buffet, tombola and more! Tickets are £7.50 for adults and £3 for under 16s.
The Eve Appeal is the only UK charity raising money for research into the risk prediction, prevention, and early diagnosis for all five gynaecological cancers- womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal. The charity is funding several pioneering research projects that aim to improve the outcomes of individuals carrying the BRCA gene mutation, including BRCA Unite and FORCEE.
Charlie said : “It is so important to me to raise awareness of gynaecological cancer and the risks associated with the BRCA genes. When I reach the age of 25, I will need to be monitored closely as my chances of both breast and ovarian cancer are quite high.
“The knowledge I have of my BRCA mutation means that I can keep on top of my health and try catch any cancer early through close monitoring. It also means that I may be able to reduce these risks to almost 0 with preventative surgeries if I so choose to. I would like children one day so having my ovaries removed to prevent ovarian cancer is not an easy option for me and hopefully I can avoid this.
“It means so much to be able to raise awareness of these under acknowledged cancers and raise money for their prevention.”
