A FUNDRAISER has been set up for a couple who lost their home to a devastating fire last Thursday.

The blaze, which began around 10am, ripped through a block of flats in Muirhouse, in the north of the capital.

Firefighters rescued four adults and one child from the property before the roof at Ferry Gait Place was entirely caved in. Billows of smoke were visible for miles around the fire.

The community around the couple has responded by raising more than £500 in just five days after a GoFundMe campaign was set up.

Nicole Mullan, who set up the fundraiser, said her colleague, Alex and her partner “tragically lost their home and belongings” in the fire.

She added: “In what has been an incredibly frightening and heartbreaking experience, they have been left without the things many of us take for granted – clothes, furniture, personal belongings and everyday essentials that make a house a home.

“Right now, their priority is simply finding somewhere safe to live and beginning to rebuild their life from the ground up.”

She added: “Any donation, no matter how big or small, will go directly towards helping Alex and her partner to replace essential belongings, secure household items, clothing and other necessities as they start again.”

Alex told The Edinburgh Evening News that she was left “frightened” and “heartbroken” when a severe fire broke out on the top floor of the Ferry Gait Place apartment block – where she lives.

The newspaper claims the entire building will have to be torn down, leaving the eight households in the flats searching for accommodation.

The fire, which began around 10am on Thursday, 10 September, left the block of flats a smouldering wreck.

Fire crews managed to promptly evacuate the building and nobody was injured, but it appears they were not able to save the building.

The fundraiser is currently halfway to its £1,000 goal.
