Edinburgh City’s remarkable season continues with the League Two leaders reaching the semi-finals of the Irn Bru Scottish Challenge Cup. The Citizens defeated Alloa Athletic – a side two divisions above them – in the quarter final at Ainslie Park on Saturday.
Yet, things looked ominous for the home side when Alloa went 2-0 up after just 12 minutes through goals from on-loan Hearts winger Dario Zanatta and Alan Trouten. However, City came storming back with goals from top scorer Blair Henderson and Scott Shepherd to level the tie at 2-2. There was no extra-time but the game was decided with a penalty shoot-out with City winning 4-3 thanks to successful penalties from Liam Henderson, Marc Laird, Allan Smith and captain Craig Thomson.
The draw for the semi-final takes place this Wednesday with City joining Ross County, Welsh side Connah’s Quay Nomads and the winners of the still to be played tie between Irish club Bohemians and East Fife.
The semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of 16th/17th February 2019.
