Police are warning the public about a new sextortion scam.

The culprit sends the victim an email containing their own password then claims to have a compromising video then demands money to prevent publication.

A statement on the Police Scotland website reads: “Anyone receiving these types of emails should review their internet security settings with their provider, run reliable and reputable malware and anti-virus software and change their security password for logins and internet router.

“Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision: paying only highlights that you’re vulnerable and that you may be targeted again.
