The Poetry Fantasy World Cup is a fun challenge for readers, reading groups and schools to increase the enjoyment of international poetry – choose poets for a fantasy world cup team from the countries participating in this year’s football World Cup.

The football might be happening in Russia but a live version of the Poetry Fantasy World Cup is taking place much closer to home at Edinburgh Central Library on Thursday 5 July between 6.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

This free event offers the chance to share the excitement, drama and emotion of international poetry and invites the audience to become World Cup managers by making their own choice of poets for the team.

Who are your literary equivalents of Ronaldo, Pogba, Messi or Costa? Come along and read your favourite poems from your World Cup poets in English translation and original language.

There’s plenty of choice for your World Cup poets – the 32 countries in the World Cup are Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia and Uruguay.
