The ‘Narcissus’ exhibition at the Whitespace Gallery is a collaborative project between the artists, Rachael Bibby and Jamie Watt and the art historians, Maro Psyrra and Davide Boschi. Taking inspiration from the myth of Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection, the artists compose a narrative exhibition that focuses on the conflict between subjectivity and individualism. Exploring the various interpretations of the story, the exhibiton’s artists renegotiate the ego-ideal and the error of self-reflection in contemporary society.
Rachael Bibby (UK, 1985) is an award winning artist who studied ‘Drawing and Painting’ at the University of Edinburgh. Her work has been featured in various solo and group exhibitions and is represented in private and public collections such as the Royal Scottish Academy. Rachael is working across different media (painting, performance, video, installation) and her art constitutes a ceaseless experimentation on the nature of Ego and the motional fragility.
Jamie Watt (UK, 1992) studied ‘Fine Arts’ at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee and has participated in numerous exhibitions. Drawing on a darkly comedic yet democratic ethos, Jamie Watt’s interdisciplinary practice is an ongoing investigation into tribalism, violence and power structures. Inspired by the social forces that have forged the modern world, Jamie’s work regularly focuses on the recontextualisation of historical narratives or artefacts to encourage new discourse surrounding contemporary cultural identity.
