Scotland’s undefeated Josh Taylor will now defend his WBC silver super lightweight title against Nicaragua’s dangerous contender Winston Campos on Saturday March 3 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.
This follows the withdrawal through injury of Mexico’s Humberto Soto but the East Lothian fighter is well aware of the dangers represented by his new challenger.
Taylor said: “It came as a bit of a shock (the withdrawal) but these things happen in boxing,
“I wish Humberto Soto all the best in his recovery but now I’m 100 per cent focused on defending my title against Winston Campos.
“I’d like to thank my team for finding a replacement at this late stage and Campos represents a different challenge, being a rangy southpaw, I’m very confident that I can put on a career best performance next weekend at the SSE Hydro.”
Campos, aged 25, is undefeated in more than four years and has an impressive professional record during an eight-year career.
He is known for his all-action style and is currently in the form of his life. In 2017 Campos had five fights, winning all of them, including four by knockout.
Campos’ last loss came in 2013 to former WBA world lightweight king Ismael Barroso and since then the man known as El Zurdo has been on a run of 14 fights unbeaten.
Taylor’s new challenger is full of confidence ahead and said: “I was in training for another fight when I got the call.
“I’m coming to Glasgow to shock the world. He (Taylor) is talented, no doubt, but I’m cut from a different cloth, I’m from the streets of Managua! I have the style to give him nightmares and I’m very confident that I can rip that title from him on March 3rd.”
