Tartan Tornado Josh Taylor lost to Ekow ‘The Engine’ Essuman by a unanimous decision on his debut at welterweight at the Hydro in Glasgow last night.
Favourite Taylor started well taking the early rounds before 36-year-old Essuman took control and landed a number of telling punches as the fight went on.
At the bell, the Nottingham fighter secured the victory with the judges scoring 116-113, 116-112, and 115-113 in his favour.
Taylor admitted that the result could have gone either way but took issue with the scorecards.
“I thought halfway through the fight I was up and then the last couple of rounds got tight. I thought I could’ve maybe sealed the deal with the last round, but he ended up winning the last round. I thought it could be close or maybe he’s got it, but I didn’t think it could be that bloody much with the points
Congratulations to Ekow and his team. He fought a great fight … Sorry again everybody for looking like a spoiled brat by walking out but it’s not a good look.”
“I would love to do it again, get it back, but he’s well entitled to go and do other things. … I would love to get it done again, have another good fight. Cause it was a good fight Thank you to everybody for the support. I’ll be back.”
After the result Taylor left the ring before his TV interview but subsequently apologised to fans for in an interview with IFL TV.
He said: “I’m a little bit gutted and disappointed at the result. I’m a winner at heart and super competitive. So I’m devastated but it is what it is.
“That’s why I jumped out of the ring at the end of the fight. I didn’t want to give an interview right after the fight because of the way I was feeling.
“I didn’t want to say somethign I’d end up regretting.
“But at the same time I should have stood there and thanked everybody for coming.
“The support I’ve received and have had in the last ten years, the atmosphere they create in The Hydro, it means the world to me. The support they give me, how they make me feel when I accomplish things
I just want to take the opportunity to apologise for doing that. I didn’t want to say anything live on TV that I would maybe end up regretting.”
