Meet Jack Shepherd aged 10 from Penicuik along with baby Jack Andrew Capes-Carr.

These two share the most popular boy’s name in Scotland for the tenth year in a row, and 453 babies registered in Scotland were named Jack in 2017 ensuring it stays in the top spot.

The second most popular name was Oliver followed by James in third place.

The top girl’s name was Olivia which was the same as last year with Emily and Isla close behind.

In total 25,384 boys and 23,935 girls were registered with National Records of Scotland and out of those 3314 different first names were chosen for boys and 4221 different names for girls.

The highest climber was the name Sienna which jumped 36 places to joint 32nd, but Charlie appears to falling from favour as it has dropped out of the top ten. New names in the top twenty include Thomas,Archie and Rory with new entrants for girls including Harper and Hannah.

Commenting on 2017’s top baby names, announced today by National Records of Scotland, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop, said:

“Naming your baby is such an important decision and it’s always fun to see the names parents around Scotland are choosing.

“This year’s figures show some names have an enduring appeal, with Jack and Olivia confirming themselves as the most popular across Scotland – Jack for the tenth year in a row and Olivia for the second.

“The trend for unique names remains far higher than it has been in previous decades, indicating that today’s parents are thinking long and hard before choosing names for their babies.”
