Castleview Primary School is to receive 70 new children’s books and new bookshelves in recognition of their ‘engaged and enthusiastic approach’ to the National Literacy Trust’s young readers programme.

National Literacy Trust event at Clarence House in honour of HRH Duchess of Cornwall’s 70th Birthday

The gift is partly to recognise the Duchess of Cornwall’s 70th birthday as Her Royal Highness is patron of the organisations and charities involved in the Duchess’s Bookshelves project. The organisations include the National Literacy Trust, Beanstalk, BookTrust, First Story, Roald Dahl Literary Estate and the Wicked Young Writer Awards.

The 70 books were chosen by children across the UK and were donated by publishers.

National Literacy Trust Director Jonathan Douglas said: “Our Patron HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is passionate about children’s literacy, so what better way to celebrate this milestone birthday than by helping more children to discover the joys of reading. We hope the Duchess’s Bookshelves will inspire even more pupils at Castleview Primary School to enjoy reading and read more widely, which our research shows has an important impact on their attainment.”

Clare Langley, Depute Headteacher at Castleview Primary School said:
“We were delighted to be gifted the Duchess’s bookshelves. We have found a great home for them in our newly refurbished ‘Book Nook’, where the books are enjoyed by the whole school community, including parents and carers. In particular, they are used in paired reading sessions or for individual one to one support. We can’t thank the National Literacy Trust enough.”
