New Fringe psychological drama to explore schizophrenia and obsession, challenging preconceived ideas about mental illness
Moss Banks Productions presents: SCHIZ, new writing by Alexander Banks, an exciting psychological drama to debut at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017.
With a minimalistic set, and elements of physical theatre, choreography and stage fighting, SCHIZ focuses on the dangerously intertwined relationship between a young man suffering from schizophrenia, the voices in his head, and his Psychiatrist.
Benjamin Teel (Alexander Banks), believes he is responsible for the murder of millions. He finds a singular lifeline in his sessions with psychiatrist Carolyn Wakefield (Laura Williamson). She offers him comfort and understanding, but dependency is a dangerous thing, and when Carolyn is reassigned and investigated for malpractice, Benjamin and his voices (Tom Denny and Megan Artherton) respond with violent psychotic outrage, leading to a climatically destructive ending emphasised by a stark lighting design by Simon Moss.
Moss Banks Productions is dedicated to growing exciting theatre.
We, and the author, believe that this is fully accomplished when the audience is encouraged to challenge preconceived ideas. With this original piece and immersive theatre, the audience will identify with the characters, questioning their feelings towards, and opinions of, those who suffer from mental illness.
In light of our current political climate, Moss Banks further aims to utilise SCHIZ to explore the relationships between doctors and patients, and the professional medical boundaries adhered to within government legislation, which potentially hinder effective treatment.
