Death, torture (and a few laughs): Atwood’s ‘The Penelopiad’ performed by all-female cast

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood – Produced by Maiden Voyagers

A five day run of the reworking of Margaret Atwood’s 2005 work, The Penelopiad begins on 7 August 2017..

A year in development, the all-female sixth-form theatre group from Portsmouth have produced a gripping and emotive retelling of Atwood’s well-received adaptation of an ancient myth, which takes the role of Penelope – Odysseus’ wife in The Odyssey – imagining the story from her perspective.

Full of creative vitality

In true Fringe style working with the limitations of the space – the cast doesn’t have the opportunity to leave the intimate stage – the ensemble of eight, multirole in this physical theatre piece.

The iconic ropes are used throughout the play, taking on multiple uses, as the scenes demand and the actors employ a range of dynamic strategies, in words, movement and song, with colourful, shape-shifting physicality.

The Maiden Voyagers raised part of the funding for the production by staging and performing in an evening of entertainment at their school. Your support through ticket sales will help cover the remaining costs.
