There are over one thousand flowers in the Floral Clock in Princes Street Gardens which is created each year by the council’s horticultural department.

This year the display marks the 200th anniversary of The Scotsman and this morning we joined the editor Frank O’Donnell and the Lord Provost the Rt Hon Frank Ross to “unveil” it for the summer.

The Lord Provost said : “I think the setting for the Floral Clock is fantastic here in Princes Street Gardens under the castle.

Frank O’Donnell Editor of The Scotsman said : “The Scotsman 200th is very special indeed. I think we are very honoured and privileged for the council to work with us to mark this bicentenary with the Floral Clock. I think it is a great colourful tribute to The Scotsman which has really been at the heart of Edinburgh for so long, and covered all the key stories that have happened in the city and across Scotland.”

The design was created in partnership between The Scotsman and the Council and bears the paper’s founders’ commitment to “good sense, courage and industry” as part of the themed plant pattern.

The Scotsman has been based in Edinburgh since it was first published in January 1817 from its original head office on the High Street. The publication has already featured in the clock’s design, with the 1992 layout marking its 175th year.
