The former North British Rubber Factory, Castle Mill Works, is one of the few buildings which remains at Fountainbridge, among the new developments there, but now it has a bright and assured future.

Work has just begun with a ground breaking ceremony at the beginning of the week, but Edinburgh Printmakers CEO Sarah Price already has her eyes firmly set on the date when they will take the building back in late 2018.

Ms Price said : “We are looking forward to being able to expand our services and to offer more facilities to artists. Basically we are going to have more capacity so we can have more artists coming to our education programmes. They will be using our open access printmaking studio, but in addition to the printmaking we are also going to create a creative industries hub. “We will have a world class exhibition space so we will really be able to show printmaking at its best.”

The building has just been stripped out with some of the timber being stored for use at a later date. Then with a cafƩ and all sorts of other goodies the new premises will become their permanent home and offer options for a new creative industries hub.

The development of Castle Mill Works will allow Edinburgh Printmakers to extend its work as a leading art charity; bringing together artists and visitors to offer everyone a direct experience of Printmaking.

Inside Castle Mill Works visitors will be welcomed to a world-class cultural facility housing galleries, a learning space, a state-of-the-art printmaking workshop, creative studios and much more. Award-winning Scottish architects, Page/Park have been appointed to bring the Grade C listed Castle Mill Works into public use for the first time in its 160-year history. Complementing the architectural design and retaining links to the history of the building, a series of permanent artwork commissions will be sited throughout the building.

The public will be made very welcome and the idea is that there will be viewing spaces to allow everyone to see the artistic process at various stages.

  1. There is a website for former employees of the North British Rubber Company / Uniroyal at Castle Mills (not Castle Mill Works as erroneously named by Edinburgh Printmakers), Newbridge and Heathhall (Dumfries) at http://www.nbrinklies.com. There is also a Facebook Group page for former employees under the name North British Rubber Co/Uniroyal. It is open to all former employees and their families to request to join.
