Police Scotland have made the following statement in response to the attack at an Islamic Cultural Centre, in Quebec on Sunday.

“The attack at the Islamic Cultural Centre, in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood of Quebec on Sunday evening illustrates once again, the indiscriminate nature of attacks on communities, designed to cause fear and disunion.

“We are appalled by this attack and our thoughts are with the victims and families of the deceased and those injured. Police Scotland strongly condemns such dreadful acts of violence.

“Police Scotland works with law enforcement partners around the world to counter all forms of terrorism and we are committed to keeping Scotland a safe place for all.

“I would like to reassure the communities of Scotland that whilst the United Kingdom threat level has been at severe since August 2014, there is no known threat or link between Scotland and this latest event.

“Those promoting hatred and discord are thankfully in the minority and it is important that we do not allow anyone to detract from Scotland’s proud stance as a diverse, multi-cultural and welcoming country.

“Police Scotland remains committed to keeping people safe and I would ask everyone to continue working together, in ensuring harmony within and between all our communities. I would also urge anyone who has been the victim of, or witness to any hate crime to contact Police Scotland and report the incident.”
