Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in the city centre which took placeĀ around 5 p.m. on Friday evening in Regent Road.

A 27-year-old man had been on-board a Number 3 Lothian Bus, which was travelling East along Princes Street when another male passenger began to cause a disturbance and was told by a number of people to calm down.

The man then alighted the bus outside the Apple store at which time the suspect also got off and grabbed him resulting in the pair getting involved in an altercation.

During this time the victim was punched to the face before members of the public intervened.

The victim then walked up Waterloo Place towards Regent Road and when he was opposite St Andrews House he was struck from behind to the head.

On turning round the man noticed that the same male from the previous disturbance was responsible.

The suspect then ran off up the steps towards Calton Hill.

Anyone who can assist police in identifying this individual is asked to come forward.

He is described black, early twenties, 5ft 11ins tall with a slim build and wearing a white baseball cap with a red brim and a white top with blue diagonal stripes on the shoulders.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart said: ā€œWe believe this attack stemmed from the victimā€™s involvement in trying to stop the suspect causing a disturbance on the bus and are keen to hear from other passengers who were on-board at the time.

ā€œIn addition, members of the public who witnessed the altercation outside the Apple store or the second assault on Regent Road are also asked to contact police immediately.ā€

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
