A Jason Cummings’ penalty kick on his 100th start for the club secured Hibs fifth straight victory in the Scottish Championship at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium in Dumbarton this afternoon.

The last time Hibs started this well was sixty years ago and the result leaves Neil Lennon’s men in pole position, two points clear of Queen of the South in the race for automatic promotion.

Lennon kept faith in the starting XI that beat Morton 4-0 with injury victim Dylan McGeouch returning to the bench.

Hibs started brightly and could have opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Paul Hanlon nodded John McGinn’s free kick into the path of Cummings at the back post but ‘Sons keeper Alan Martin managed to clear the danger.

Dumbarton looked dangerous on the break however and won four consecutive corners before Hibs took the lead in the 31st minute.  McGinn’s cross was headed into the danger area by David Gray and Gregor Buchanan dragged Grant Holt to the ground conceding a clear penalty which Cummings calmly converted.

The young striker should have added a second moments later when he found himself clear through on goal but his lob flew inches over the bar.

Hibs continued to dominate but were unable to add to their lead.

Andrew Shinnie set up substitute Brian Graham near the end but the strikers effort was well saved by Martin and Hibs held on for the three points.

Hibs face Ayr United at Easter Road next Saturday whilst second place Queen of the South face third place Raith Rovers at Palmerston Park.
