High Court Edinburgh

A man who attempted to murder a 26-day-old baby has been convicted at Livingston High Court.

Damien Menzies was found guilty of violently shaking the baby boy at Deans Community High School, Livingston, in October 2014.

The child suffered a serious brain injury and was taken to St John’s Hospital, before being transferred to the Edinburgh Sick Kid’s.

Detective Constable Iain Holmes said: “Menzies perpetrated a violent attack on a baby in his care, causing permanent damage to this child’s health.

“He has refused to take responsibility for his actions ever since, and we welcome today’s conviction.

“The investigation and trial have been incredibly difficult for the child’s family.

“I want to take this opportunity to commend them for showing the utmost bravery throughout.

“Although nothing can undo Menzies’ actions, I hope this result can help them to move forward.”

Menzies is due to be sentenced at Edinburgh High Court on 19th July 2016.
