Centenary of the execution of Edith Cavell First World War nurse
The première of a new play by Clive Holland and starring Mary Rose as Edith Cavell and fictional war correspondent Eadi Martin will be at Momentum Venues St. Stephen’s Centre New Town from Thursday 6 – Sunday 30 August 2015 at 2.20pm. Running time 1 hour 15 mins.
12.10.15 is produced by award winning Proteus Theatre Company and directed by Mary Swan with design by Sam Pine.
Exactly one hundred years apart, two women’s lives are defined by conflict. A war-hardened, weary and cynical 21st century female war correspondent is being held in a Middle Eastern city. As she awaits her fate, she finds surprising parallels and strength recounting the story of Edith Cavell a WW1 nurse who was shot as a spy by German forces in 1915 in occupied Belgium.
In 2013 eighty-two reporters were kidnapped, seventy-one journalists killed, eight hundred arrested, and over two thousand physically attacked. In 2015 so far, 25 journalists have been killed.
Mary Rose’s stage roles include Masha in ‘Fortune’s Fool’ Chichester Festival Theatre with Alan Bates and Rachel Pickup and the Maid in Ian Rickson’s Royal Court production of ‘The Seagull’ 2007 with Kristin Scott Thomas and Carey Mulligan which transferred to Broadway 2008. Stage roles at Proteus include Mary Shelley and Elizabeth Lavenza in ‘Frankenstein’. Mary Rose has been General Manager at The Old Vic.
Mary Swan has been Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Proteus since 2004. Her production of ‘Merrick The Elephant Man’ has been seen in Edinburgh, London and ‘Brits off Broadway’ New York. 12.10.15 is part of Proteus ‘One by One’ season of solo performances. Clive Holland has written many plays for Mischievous Theatre. He has played Estragon in ‘Waiting for Godot’, Jimmy Porter in ‘Look Back in Anger’ and the Porter in ‘Macbeth’ for UK tours.
