The Edinburgh Fringe could not ignore Scotland’s forthcoming referendum on independence. Thus, there are a plethora of shows on the most important issue facing Scotland in 300 years.
The Pure, The Dead and The Brilliant is a new satire from Alan Bissett. Directed by Sacha Kyle, it asks the most pressing of questions about contemporary Scotland: what would happen if the bogles, banshees, demons and selkies of Scots folklore began to interfere in the independence referendum?
The result is a hilarious look at mythology, politics, magic and history from the team that brought you the hugely acclaimed shows The Moira Monologues, The Red Hourglass and Ban This Filth!
This uproarious play, drawing on Scotland’s music hall traditions, wears its heart on its sleeve, but keeps its tongue in its cheek. The Pure, The Dead and The Brilliant stars television and theatre icon Elaine C Smith as a melodramatic, country & western-singing Banshee, Paul James Corrigan (Gary, Tank Commander; River City) as Bogle, a loyal member of the Tartan Army, Michele Gallagher (I, Tommy) as a seductive Selkie in a Union Jack frock and Martin McCormick (Takin’ Over The Asylum; I Was A Beautiful Day) as the terrifying Lord Black Donald of the Faslane Naval Base. Music by Lou Hickey and Swimmer One.
