Traditional Scottish dishes with a modern twist
The award winning Whiski Rooms is a bar/bistro/whisky shop located on The Mound. The Whiski Rooms are connoisseurs of local produce, Scottish drinks and specialist whiskies. The cosy bistro is perfect for a mid-week meal or lengthy weekend dinner. With comfortable leather chairs, open brickwork and exposed brass finishings, it is the perfect time of year to experience this quintessentially Scottish venue.
Although it is famed as being one of the best Whisky bars in the World, with over 300 malts, I have to admit Celia and I didn’t try any of the gold nectar. That said, after ordering a delightfully rare steak I did opt for a whisky sauce and I can tell you it was tasty! The bistro offers a blend of classic and modern dishes using the finest of local produce, and this really shows on their wonderful menu. Aberdeen Angus steaks, Scottish salmon and whisky puddings all add to the allure of the dining experience.
I was delighted to see pigeon on the menu, one of my favourites. This starter was cooked beautifully with beetroot, which really brought out the flavour – yum. I then went for the melt in the mouth steak with the Whiski Rooms infamous triple-cooked chips. This style of chip is pretty ‘in vogue’ at the moment and these were crispy morsels.
Celia opted for Haggis spring rolls, a funky take on the traditional Scottish favourite, followed by fish and triple cooked chips (Celia had to try them too). We made sure we both made room for pudding with such a fantastic menu. I went for the day’s special which was a white chocolate and blueberry cheesecake. It was as deliciously rich as it sounds, but even after my steak and pigeon I still managed to finish it! Celia had a much more seasonal apple and cinnamon crumble. She really enjoyed it, especially as it was so Christmassy!
We would both highly recommend the Whiski Rooms, not only as a convenient little bistro in the centre of town but also as a bar too. We know it is a real hit during the festival but its warm interiors absolutely suit the winter months. If you haven’t been, definitely try it, even if only for a wee dram!
This is a great find for any foreign visitors or friends from south of the border too. It is a real Scottish gem showing off traditional Scottish dishes at their finest, but with a modern twist.
