The Edinburgh Reporter Police cordon

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault that happened in the Cowgate area of the Capital in the early hours of Saturday morning (July 13).

The incident happened in Guthrie Street around 3.20am, near to its junction with the Cowgate. A 30-year-old man was involved in an altercation involving a group of men and women, and sustained a serious head injury.

He was taken by ambulance to the Western General Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. Police wish to trace a number of suspects in connection with this incident, including two men and a woman, who are all described as being in their early 20s.

The woman is described as white, 5ft 5ins tall, large build, with short brown hair with a short back and sides style, and wearing blue baggy jeans and a dark top with an orange or pink cardigan.

Both men are described as white and 5ft 10ins to 6ft tall; slim to medium build, and wearing t-shirt and shorts.

The area was busy at the time of the incident, and it is believed that a number of people have witnessed the assault.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist their inquiries to contact Police Scotland on 101, or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
