Two Edinburgh College photography students won all five categories at the national British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) Awards ceremony held in London last week.

Angel Goday won the Student Photographer of the Year – winning Single Image and Commercial categories, and Lee Howell won the BIPP College Portfolio Award plus the People and Portraiture and Visual Arts categories.

Lee was also awarded a full Associate Membership to the BIPP so he can now use the letters ‘ABIPP’ after his name.

Both students are in their final year of study for the BA in Professional Photography at Edinburgh College.

Lee Howell said:-“Winning these awards is a massive achievement for me and gaining recognition for all the hard work that I have put in over this past year means so much. Coming on the back of winning the Towergate Camerasure Fine art award, five Scottish Regional BIPP Awards, and being awarded my Associateship means this has been one incredible year for me as a student, and I just hope that I can carry that success through into my professional career.”

Angel Goday said:- “I am really grateful to receive these awards and it has come as a huge surprise. I have only been using Photoshop for one year so this is a great achievement for me and has shown me that my hard work has paid off. I would like to say a big thank you to the teaching staff at Edinburgh College for their encouragement.”

The successes at yesterday’s awards come shortly after the Scottish regional awards where the overall winner was Edinburgh College student Linda Macpherson, with Lee Howell winning the Photojournalism category. The pair and their fellow photography students at the Sighthill campus swept the board, with 15 students winning a total of 21 category awards and merits.

Linda Macpherson said:-“I am thrilled and honoured to have won the overall student award and the Advertising/Fashion category in the BIPP Scottish Region Student Awards.”

Lee Howell has also just been announced as the winner in the BIPP Towergate Fine Art Competition 2013, achieving a gold award and a certificate of merit in the Student Single Image category.

The students’ course tutor Jon Lee said:- “I can’t stress enough how exceptional this is – the total awards won this year by our students has been phenomenal. We are so proud of their achievements and have every confidence they will be hugely successful in their future careers.”

BIPP President, Roy Meiklejon FBIPP commented:- “The winning images were of a very high standard and serve as a testament to the quality and diversity of work produced by members of the BIPP.”

This week the Edinburgh College BA Professional Photography graduates will be exhibiting their work at Free Range Art and Design Show in London.
