Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses and issuing a security warning following a number of break-ins and thefts from vehicles in the South and East of Edinburgh on Monday 4 March 2013.

The first incident was reported to police around 7.45am at an address in Peacocktail Close.

A black cab driver returned to his taxi and found the front passenger window had been smashed and a PDA and mobile phone were stolen.

A similar report was then made at around 11am in Niddrie Mains Road after a Fiat Punto had its front passenger window smashed before a watch and wallet were taken from inside.

Between 1.45pm and 2.45pm in Duddingston Park South, a Vauxhall Astra was then broken into and a handbag, which was left within the vehicle, was stolen.

Police were also contacted just after 7pm after a man reported his Landrover Freelander’s front passenger window was smashed and an iPhone was taken from inside.

Officers are currently investigating whether these incidents are linked and are urging motorists to ensure they take appropriate security measures when leaving their vehicles unattended.

A police spokesman said:- “In each of these thefts, personal possessions or valuable pieces of electronic equipment were stolen having been left in view within the vehicles.

“We are currently conducting local enquiries to identify those responsible and anyone who can assist with our investigations is asked to contact police immediately.

“Drivers are reminded to make sure their vehicle is secured safely when they are not within it and to remove all items of value during these times.

“Anyone who would like further crime prevention advice can contact their local policing team or visit the Lothian and Borders Police website .
