The council has confirmed that it is in discussions with the organisers about a mass participation cycling event called Sky Ride in the papers for the Culture and Leisure Committee which meets today.
The Reporter had the opportunity of seeing this event take place in Dublin last year. It is a great opportunity for cyclists of all ages to experience city centre cycling – without cars. What they did in Dublin was make lanes throughout the city centre with barriers and divert the cyclists onto pathways through parks. This made it very easy indeed for parents with young children to introduce them to street cycling.
The discussions are still at an early stage, and the Culture and Leisure Committee confirm that full details will be presented to the next meeting of the Committee for approval which will take place on 24 April 2012.
