People in Edinburgh and the Lothians are being invited to join with talented local youngsters at the Usher Hall later this month for some seasonal celebrations at a special charity concert.

The ChildLine Winter Concert – which has been organised by NSPCC Scotland in conjunction with The City of Edinburgh Council – has become an established event in the city’s music calendar. Now in its 17th year, this much-loved concert features bands, orchestras, singers and ensembles involving young musicians from across the region’s schools. Together they will be performing a selection of seasonal favourites and popular classics which is sure to help everyone stave off the January blues.

All proceeds will go towards the development of ChildLine – the NSPCC’s 24-hour, confidential helpline service for children and young people – which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary.

NSPCC Scotland community fundraising manager, Susie Barron said: “Since 1986 ChildLine has given over 2.6 million children who desperately needed to talk somewhere to turn. Twenty five years later, ChildLine is still offering children a safe, confidential place to talk about their worries and we continue to see a growing demand for help from children and young people.”

She added: “It’s thanks to generous public support through events like the Winter concert that we are able to raise the money needed to fund ChildLine and be there whenever and wherever children need us.”

The concert starts at 3:00pm on Sunday, January 22 at the Usher Hall. Tickets are priced at £10.00 for adults, £5 for children/concession and can be obtained by contacting the box office on 0131 228 1155 or visiting www.usherhall.co.uk.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra appear at The Queen’s Hall tonight at 7.30. The concert is entitled In the Steppes of Central Europe:-

“Millions ‘discovered’ Ligeti without realising it when Kubrick peppered he soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey with his work. It gave him popular success, and few would dispute that he is one of the five most important composers of the past 40 years. Here is a chance, over two weeks, to hear two very different but equally fine scores by him. The ‘Hamburg’ Concerto pays tribute to Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Ticciati performs it with popular favourites from Central Europe.”

There is a pre concert talk at 6.30
