Edinburgh Airport is preparing itself for what could be its busiest weekend ever. It is estimated that 130,000 passengers will pass through its doors this weekend averaging over 32,000 passengers per day.
The airport, recently voted Europe’s Best Airport: 5 million – 10 million passengers is 5th largest in the UK with a passenger flow of around 9 million.
This weekend sees many Scottish schools break up and the holiday season begin in earnest. That, coupled with the growing choice of routes from Edinburgh Airport including over 20 added this year alone, means that this weekend will be especially busy.
This weekend’s top destinations from Edinburgh are London, Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris and Birmingham.
Edinburgh Airport has registered a year of growth seeing its busiest March and April with only the ash cloud affecting May’s figure. This June will be the airport’s busiest on record with over 900 000 passengers. Its busiest month ever was July 2010 when 960 000 passengers travelled through Edinburgh.
Kevin Brown, Managing Director, Edinburgh Airport, said:- “It’s great to see the airport so busy and that so many passengers are choosing our airport to travel from. 2011 has been a great year so far and its rewarding to see the airport bounce back from significant challenges of 2010.
“We’ll be working hard to ensure every passenger has a good experience at Edinburgh at this busy period. Our recent award means that the expectation on us has gone up. Every passenger will expect “Best in Europe” service all of the time. We’re up to that challenge and look forward to welcoming passengers this weekend.”
