Leith’s Community Radio Station is in search of Leithers with something to say!

Leith FM is trying to ensure that its programmes reflect the people and events of the local area and is keen to hear from older folk who would like to volunteer and take to the airwaves.

“We want real locals to come and present programmes,” says LFM Chairman Mike Templeton. “It’s important that the station talks about what matters to local people and the best way of doing that is to get residents on air.”

The station is moving into a new era with work underway to install new equipment, replacing worn out gear. And it is hoped that it will be an opportunity to give the station a wider appeal.

“We have lots of talented youngsters,” adds Mike, “but we want characters who can talk to those of their own age. Not just to share memories but also to discuss present day concerns, and yet be entertaining. You never know, we might discover a new Wogan!”

New programmes are being planned which will offer more opportunities to delve into modern day Leith, but they need to be presented by people with a real interest in getting a range of views broadcast. Full training is being offered along with guidance on creating radio programmes.

“We’re not looking for DJs. We want people who will want to share opinions. It’s not a soap box for the presenters, but a forum for the whole community to exchange views.” Mike is keen to point out that the station is for everyone, not just youngsters. “We’ll be looking at the music we play, and also giving that side of things a broader range.”

He wants the output to have real Leith appeal and adds: “We have a lot of online listeners, and many of them are expats tuning in to catch up with what’s happening in their old patch. We hope that will increase with the new local sound. After all Leith FM is the only radio station For Leith From Leith!”
