At the oath taking / making solemn affirmation ceremony in the Scottish Parliament today, the Scottish National Party group of 69 MSPs will wear the “little white rose of Scotland” – from the poem of the same name by Hugh MacDiarmid:

THE LITTLE WHITE ROSE

“The rose of all the world is not for me
I want for my part
Only the little white rose of Scotland
That smells sharp and sweet – and breaks the heart”

There are two important council meetings this morning, firstly the Planning Local Review Body which meets at the City Chambers at 9 and the Development Management Sub-Committee which will discuss the future of the Fountain Brewery and the former Odeon cinema beginning at 10am. The committee is recommending refusal of an application to demolish the former Odeon.

Edinburgh Castle is both praised and slated by the tourism industry as reported by Craig Brown in The Scotsman. On the one hand it is said to be atmospheric but on the other too expensive!
