Edinburgh College of Art launched its stunning new student Fashion Collection at Harvey Nichols last week
Course Leader at the ECA, Mal Burkinshaw, said that the new fashions will be showcased at the ECA Fashion Show on the 4, 5 and 6 May 2011. Five designers out of the 18 students on the course will have the opportunity to show off their wares.
Burkinshaw added that the second year students will be displaying some of their work too at the show. They will be designed for people of all races, heights, shapes and sizes, as many of the students will be aiming to get into the fashion industry. Burkinshaw then takes the students down to the London Graduate Fashion Week where the industry sees their designs and allows them to meet the students and can also critique their portfolios. Other students go on to do Masters degrees at university.
Barbara Kosinski designed the colourful outfit with the Orange jacket and multi-coloured pants. She said that the inspiration came from her grandfather’s Polish heritage. Kosinski’s collection shows the inspiration taken from her research.
Anna Stevenson, designed the floral and cream dress with the ‘splicing’. She said the design inspiration came from some paintings she did and photographs which she took. These images were then digitally printed onto the fabric to produce the base design. The idea she had was that you could “pull things away from each other and yet put them back together”. With a lot of her collections she examines religious images. Stevenson has been accepted by Parsons College in New York to do an MA in Fashion Design.
Charlotte Turner, Rona Leslie and Victoria Middleton will model the selection of work on 4-6 May 2011
Long established as one of key events in the capital’s cultural calendar, the Edinburgh College of Art Fashion Show, sponsored by Baillie Gifford, will break with tradition this year to present a different show format and also a choice of three separate programmes. The final collections of work by graduating students will be shown in salon style, with models walking at audience level, allowing for an intimate atmosphere closely associated with the shows of the Paris couture houses.
As well as presenting in salon style, this year audiences can choose from three distinct show programmes: Fashion, Performance Costume and a Mixed Show that includes work from both Fashion and Performance Costume.
