Pupils from two city schools have been helping to transform Edinburgh’s Waste Education Cabin – just in time for spring.
The Waste Education Cabin which is based at Seafield Recycling Centre encourages local residents, both young and old, to become more aware of the environment around them.
Recently, young people from St John’s RC Primary School and Leith Walk Primary School got together for a gardening project with a difference – to transform the exterior of the Cabin just in time for the warmer weather.
Pupils’ worked with gardeners from charity, Greenworks to decide on the best native flowers to plant and also found out about the benefits of planting their own fruit and vegetables.
For their make-over the budding young gardeners also created designs showing how they wanted the exterior of the Cabin to look.
The project is part of a wider plan to renovate the inside and outside of the Cabin – which is very popular and attracts around 450 visitors a year.
Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environmental Leader, said: “This is a great project to renovate and spruce up the very popular Waste Education Cabin. Pupils’ were able to see their gardening designs come to life and what better way to learn about the city’s waste than working on this special project. As well as the Cabin receiving a make-over, there is also the serious message that everyone can do their bit to reduce, reuse and recycle.”
The Waste Education Cabin at Seafield Recycling Centre is the largest of its kind in Edinburgh and schools, community groups and local residents can all visit to find out more about how they can reduce, recycle and reduce.
Throughout the city, the public are recycling more and more waste each year through the kerbside collections, on-street sites and Community Recycling Centres.
The range of materials that can be recycled is increasing all the time. For example, furniture and other good quality items can be donated to the Reuse Cabin at all four Community Recycling Centres in Edinburgh.
