The University of Edinburgh is organising its first Climate Conference next weekend.

The Conference Coordinator, Robbie Marwick, told The Edinburgh Reporter that the event “aims to take a multi-disciplinary approach to climate change and climate challenges focusing primarily on how Scotland can contribute to the global effort”.  Across the course of two days the prominent environmental specialists will be looking at the costs of inaction, the environmental policies of UK, sustainable technologies to change the world, adaptable business solutions and the role of the individual. The Conference is organised entirely by students but is supported by The University of Edinburgh.

Professor Stephen Salter is one of the speakers. He has many ideas  about many things and is fervently passionate about climate change. His principal solution at the moment is :-“One of several possible emergency global cooling-systems which could keep temperature under control until renewable sources can be fully developed. It exploits a well-known phenomenon known as the Twomey effect. The idea, due to John Latham, is to increase the amount of solar energy reflected from marine stratocumulus clouds by increasing the number of cloud condensation nuclei in the marine boundary layer. For the same amount of liquid water, a larger number of small drops make a whiter cloud than the smaller number of large drops which result from the shortage of condensation nuclei in clean mid-ocean air. The increase can be achieved by spraying submicron drops of sea water. The salty residues are ideal seeds for new cloud drops. The volumes of water needed turn out to be surprisingly small.”

Registration has already started and only few places are left! You can book calling at 07772 733 831 or registering at the conference website. A charge of £7 is payable. The proceeds are to be donated to a sustainability charity which will be voted for by the conference audience. You can also follow the chat on  Facebook.

The charities to choose from are: Keep Scotland Beautiful, The Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust, The John Muir Trust and Friends of the Earth Scotland

There will be a free drinks reception at the end of each day when speakers and delegates can engage in an informal setting.  Buffet style lunch will also be provided each day.
