A 40-year-old man needed treatment for burns after a fire in the bathroom of his home in Edinburgh.

The alarm was raised at 4.40pm on Thursday afternoon  to a fire in a second floor flat at Niddrie Mill Drive. Firefighters attended and discovered there had been a fire in the bathroom which was extinguished before they arrived.

Two firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, vented the property for smoke and called an ambulance for the occupant. Crews administered oxygen and a burns kit to the casualty who was suffering from smoke inhalation and a burn to his leg.

He was taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “We would urge people to ensure that they have a working smoke alarm in their home. If you discover a fire, you should get out of the property if it is safe to do so and call us out immediately.
