Report and Photographs by John Preece
Cardiff made the trip to Edinburgh for the final round in the Heineken Cup qualifiers, needing a win to ensure a place in the knock-out stages. This they duly did, but had to depend on the respective boots of Dan Parks and Lee Halfpenny, who shared the Blues 21 points between them.
Edinburgh scored the only try of the match just after the half-hour mark, with Ben Cairns following up his own kick through, but Chris Paterson then missed the conversion. Paterson made up for it a few minutes later to leave the half-time score 11-6 to Edinburgh.
In the second half, both teams had periods of sustained pressure on the opposition try line, but to no avail, with the final score of 14-21 coming from a series of penalty kicks from Paterson, for Edinburgh and Parks and Halfpenny for Cardiff.
Northampton and Cardiff, therefore, qualify from Pool 1, with Castres and Edinburgh having to wait until next year.

Slight error in my report, in that, results elsewhere prevented Cardiff from qualifying for the next round.
