Edinburgh-based Athena Language Camps is launching its first immersive trip to Spain this summer, offering the experience to teenagers during the school holidays.
Rachel Athey, 52, was inspired to launch the business during her work with Queen Margaret University and St Andrews College Language Schools, which brings European teens to Scotland for an English-language summer school.
Having seen firsthand how young people flourish when immersed in a new language and culture, Athey wanted to create similar opportunities abroad for her own daughter and other Scottish teenagers – helping them grow in confidence, independence and global awareness.
Rachel said: “Athena is about giving young people the chance to step outside their comfort zone and discover what they’re capable of. When teenagers are immersed in a different culture, navigating new environments and communicating in another language, they develop confidence and resilience in a way that simply isn’t possible in the classroom, or in front of a screen.
“At the same time, we know that summer can be a challenging period for families. Parents are often juggling work commitments while trying to create meaningful experiences for their children across six weeks of holiday. Athena offers a positive, structured and enriching option that benefits both teenagers and their families.”
Athena Language Camps takes a practical, real-world approach to language learning. Rather than focusing purely on classroom instruction, the programme combines interactive lessons with cultural experiences, social activities and time to explore—helping teenagers build fluency, independence and adaptability.
The inaugural trip will take place at the end of July 2026, with a week-long stay at Lacunza Spanish School in Donostia-San Sebastián. The programme includes language lessons, cultural excursions and group activities, all designed to encourage personal growth and connection.
Open to teenagers aged 13–17, the camp is particularly suited to those studying Spanish or interested in travel, new experiences and developing skills for the future.
Each group is supported by a dedicated UK-based pastoral team, including a Welfare Guardian, ensuring a safe and supportive environment throughout the trip.
Rachel Athey added, “Athena Language Camps provide an opportunity for young people to explore, learn and connect with others, meaning the modern dependent on screens naturally takes a back seat.
Ultimately, we are about helping teenagers return home more confident, more independent and more curious about the world around them.”
