Following an incident earlier on Thursday afternoon, emergency services were called to Morningside Road around 2pm.
Police Scotland said a report had been made to them that an unknown substance had been found on a lamppost.
Following testing, the substance had been found to pose no threat to the public and has been removed.
The road was closed to allow for enquiries at the scene and has since reopened.
