Hibs midfielder Josh Campbell has reflected an a ‘mental afternoon’ at Ibrox.
The home-grown youngster certainly won’t forget his contribution against Rangers at Ibrox anytime soon.
On his first start of the 2026/27 season – and his first since Hibs 2-1 win in Govan in May – Campbell once again repaid the faith put in him by head coach David Gray by putting Hibs ahead from the penalty spot after 12 minutes.
That looked enough to seal victory, only for Miguel Chaiwa to deflect substitute Djeidi Gassama’s low cross beyond Raphael Sallinger with just five minutes of normal time left.
But there was a late twist to come as Hibs broke from a Rangers corner in stoppage time, and Callum Wright’s deflected shot found a way into the far corner to seal back-to-back victories at Ibrox for the fourth time in the Club’s history.
Although his minutes have been more limited of late due to the performances of Josh Mulligan and Chaiwa, alongside a few injury issues, Campbell was delighted to play his part of an unforgettable afternoon.
He said to Hibs TV: “It was a mental afternoon!
“I think we rode our luck a little bit, and the lads hung in there, but there were a lot of tired boys out there.
“That presented an opportunity for someone like myself, who has had a broken pre-season, but credit to the lads to get a late winner.
“With the European matches, we know the squad is going to get stretched by playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, so there were a couple of tired boys out there, but you’ve got to be ready when you’re called upon, and I was delighted to take the penalty and score it.
“I’ve done it my whole career (taking his chances), basically, and it’s just about being ready at the right moments to come back in when called upon.
“I did it at Falkirk at the end of last season, and I’ve done it today, so I’m quite happy with it.
“It was quite funny on the bench at the end because there were a couple of shouts about certain people running too far forward, but it was great for the lads who hung right in there to the end, and to get the winner, it’s a great feeling, especially for the fans who were there today and were excellent throughout.
“Now, there’s nothing better than a game on Thursday in North Macedonia, which is a massive game for us.
“We’ll take our lead there and look forward to it.”
