Jacob Fearnley is in to the first round of the Montreal Masters tennis tournament and a pay cheque of at least £20,000 after coming through qualifying with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Austrian No 1 Sebastian Ofner.

The Edinburgh player, who is expected to begin his campaign proper on Tuesday, made around half the number of unforced errors as his opponent – 16 to 31 – and that was perhaps key to the contest against a player currently ranked No 123 but has been as high at world No 37/

Fearnley’s East county compatriot Scott Duncan, meanwhile, excelled by reaching the final of the Bonn tournament doubles – an ATP 75 event – in company with Adam Heinonen but in a tight encounter featuring just one break of serve bowed out to Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Ramkumat Ramanathan.

It was a valiant effort by Duncan on the back of an intensive inter county cup campaign with the East team at Eastbourne last week where he was heavily involved in helping the team retain their Group One status.
