Meadowbank will play host to a series of free sports days for children throughout the school holidays.

The “Go for Gold” events, organised by Edinburgh Leisure, will take place at Meadowbank Sports Centre on 30 July, followed by sessions at Drumbrae Leisure Centre in the west of the city on 31 July.

Designed for children aged five to twelve, the initiative offers hands-on sessions inspired by Commonwealth Games sports.

The events are funded by SportScotland’s Summer of Sport 2026 campaign, backed by a £20m Scottish Government investment to increase accessibility to physical activity.

Meadowbank Sports Centre provides a relevant backdrop for the activities, having twice hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and 1986.

Originally built for the 1970 Games at a cost of £2.8m, the historic venue recently underwent a £47m redevelopment before reopening as a modern community facility in 2022.

The two-day programme aims to give young people the opportunity to try new activities and build confidence outside of term time.

Angela McCowan, Sports Development Manager at Edinburgh Leisure, said: “Go for Gold is a brilliant opportunity for children to get into the spirit of sport this summer, try something new and have fun in a welcoming environment.

“With activities inspired by Commonwealth Games sports, the events are a great way for children to enjoy being active, discover new interests and see what’s on offer at Edinburgh Leisure.”

The SportScotland Summer of Sport 2026 initiative is working with local authorities and national organisations to deliver targeted or reduced-cost events across the country.

The wider programme aims to capitalise on the momentum of the upcoming Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2026 FIFA World Cup to encourage youth participation.
