“I never wanted it to end, but it must.” Those words were spoken by Craig Gordon in a video which confirmed his retirement from playing football.
The 43-year-old ended his career at his boyhood club, Heart of Midlothian, and was a member of Scotland’s World Cup squad this summer.
And the player admitted: “I have lived my dreams and, for that, I am so thankful.”
The Edinburgh-born player is expected to say his farewells when Spanish cracks, Rayo Vallecano, visit Tynecastle on Friday (19.45) in a challenge match as the Jambos continue their pre-season build-up.
He added: “You, the fans, have given me everything, and it has been a privilege to represent you. I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.”
Gordon played for Hearts, Celtic, Sunderland, Cowdenbeath and Scotland and he won major honours with Hearts and Celtic.
His move to Sunderland from Edinburgh in 2007 broke the British transfer record for a goalkeeper, £9m, now it is all over.
Gordon said: “The biggest names, at the biggest stadiums, on the biggest stage, I’ve savoured every moment of it.”
